Club América and the Mexican national team were dealt a major blow after goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón suffered a serious injury during América’s Concacaf Champions Cup match against the Philadelphia Union.

Malagón went down in the first half after a non-contact play and had to be stretchered off the field around the 36th minute. Initial reports indicate the América goalkeeper likely suffered a rupture of his Achilles tendon, an injury that typically requires at least six months of recovery.

If confirmed, the injury would almost certainly rule Malagón out of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, a devastating setback for the 29-year-old who had established himself as one of Mexico’s top goalkeepers.

With Malagón potentially unavailable, the goalkeeper situation for Mexico national football team becomes a major question ahead of the tournament. Players such as Raúl Rangel, Carlos Acevedo, Andres Gudiño and veteran Guillermo Ochoa could now enter the conversation as options for El Tri.

While América secured a 1–0 victory in the match, the result was overshadowed by the concern surrounding Malagón’s injury and what it could mean for both club and country in the months ahead.
